Record your screen

Record a full display or a selected area at 30 or 60 fps, with your camera and your microphone or the system sound.

Updated

Choose what to record

  • Full screen records the whole display that holds the Screen Recorder window. To record another display, move the window to that display first.
  • Select area lets you drag a rectangle on any connected display. The area must be at least 80 × 80 points.

Screen Recorder records one display at a time. It leaves its own windows out of the video: the recording bar and the camera preview do not appear in the recording.

Choose the sound

Choose a microphone, or choose Off · System sound.

  • With a microphone, the recording has your voice and no system sound.
  • With the microphone off, the recording has the system sound.

One recording cannot have both. iPhone microphones show in the list too. If an iPhone microphone does not start, the recorder shows a message under the microphone menu.

Add your camera

Choose a camera to record your face. Screen Recorder records the camera as a separate track. While you record, a small camera preview shows in the corner of the screen, and it is not part of the screen recording. In the editor, you can move the camera, change its size and shape, and put it over or beside the screen.

Frame rate and quality

  • Frame rate: 30 or 60 fps. The default is 60 fps.
  • Quality: High (the default) or Standard.

The recording uses the native pixels of the display or the selected area.

Automatic zoom

Turn on the Auto zoom switch before you record if you want the video to zoom toward your clicks. It is off by default. See automatic zoom.

Stop the recording

A small bar shows the time while you record. Select Stop to end the recording. There is no pause button and no time limit. The editor opens with the recording on the timeline.

Where recordings go

Each recording is saved as one .ascreen project in Movies > Screen Recorder. Finder shows a project as one file. A project holds the screen video, the cursor data, and the camera video if you recorded one.

To open a project again, use My Projects in the app, or double-click the project in Finder. The editor then starts again from the original recording. Edits from an earlier session are not kept in the project, so export the video before you close the editor.
