Edit a recording

The panels and keyboard shortcuts of the Screen Recorder editor, and what each part of the timeline does.

Updated

The editor opens as soon as you stop a recording. There is no import step. You can also import a video file from your Mac and edit it.

The timeline

From top to bottom, a new recording has these tracks:

  • Captions, if you recorded with a microphone.
  • Camera, if you recorded a camera.
  • Cursor zoom, if Auto zoom was on.
  • Screen, the recording itself.

Split a clip at the playhead with S, then select the part you do not want and press Delete. Use this to remove a mistake or the setup at the start.

The panels

Panel What it does
Cursor Show or hide the cursor, change its size and style (black arrow, white arrow, dot, or highlight), and show clicks with a colour and size.
Zoom Add Zoom In, Zoom Out, In & Out, or Shake at the playhead. Change the level and speed of the automatic zoom.
Camera Change the camera shape (square, horizontal, vertical, or original) and its layout over or beside the screen.
Background Put the recording on a wallpaper, gradient, colour, image, or blur. Change the padding, the corner radius, and the shadow.
Video and Image Add your own videos and images from My Library.
Audio Add a sound from the built-in library of nine sounds, which includes three music tracks.

The cursor settings need the cursor data. If the Input Monitoring permission was off while you recorded, the cursor is part of the video picture, and these settings do not change it.

Clips also have Crop, Freeze Frame, Detach Audio, Mute, and Duplicate.
